A Chat with Jonathan

10 Apr

A few nights ago, Jonathan London and I chatted about his upcoming record, his life, and  his musical process.  It was fun; I’d like to do a lot more shows like this.  Great tracks and live performances here, previewing his album, which I played on a little bit:

HOTELS new record is DEEP!

6 Apr

My old friends HOTELS (from Seattle and New York) have released an album that makes me overjoyed with jealousy, if that is possible.  So dang genius!  Listen to On the Casino Floor, a concept album of the highest musical power:

Now, I ain’t big on contests, but these guys are in the final three on the Billboard Awards.  If you are feeling this music, please do take a moment and two mouse clicks to go and vote for them.  It’s really easy, I promise:

Thanks for listening.  As you regular readers know, it is rare and special for me to hype a band this way!

With much gratitude,

Love At Last!

15 Feb

Dear Sweet Babies- Here is the LOVE SEEING LOVERS video piece!

Happy Valentine’s Day (special dedication to my boosedria, who caused this song)

Name Check

9 Feb

Greetings Y’all.  The new year brings new jams.  Here are two working mixes from my forthcoming GHOST OF PAYPHONE ep, the darker twin of Home Phone.

I’ve name checked some heroes in the lyrics on this ep.  Vonnegut’s Cat’s Cradle was an inspiration for “Smashing”, the first tune.

Hit  track advance and you’ll hear “the Myth of Mystikal”, an homage to the great New Orleans rapper Mystikal.

He’s recently been released from Louisianna State Pen, which you’ll hear about in my semi-fictional flow.  If you’ve never heard Mystikal, don’t deprive yourself any further.  There’s no one like him.  Particularly, I admire an album called “Unpredictable”, released in 1997. His rhythms, characters and stories had a huge effect on me at a tender age.

There’s a lot in the pipeline.  Very soon, SO very soon, I’ll be releasing the Love Seeing Lovers Video.  That’s when I will hollar next.

Soul-stice

16 Dec

On the third day of Christmas, my true love gave to me, a surprise meet-up with a quinoa bowl…

PEOPS! Magic all around, right?  Tired and inspired, I am.

On friday, we’ll be wrapping up a trio of dates at Ex’pression College, where we’re tracking “Ghost of Payphone”, the gemini twin to Home Phone. Darker at times than it’s predecessor,  kind of a vintage electrical storm.  To whet the ears, here’s Sam Ospovat doing some improvising on “Smashing”:

On the down-home kinda tip, WHAT ARE YOU DOING THIS SUNDAY?  Me and the quartet are playing at Aubergine Vintage Emporium

4-7pm

755 Petaluma Avenue
Sebastopol, CA 95472 (707) 827-3460, $3 Cover

This is a holiday jam kind of affair, so a lot of friends will be dropping in to play. Luke Westbrook will play a solo set, and Biko + Lapo Cassini will play some of their newest music. (from the Farm in Tennesee, the longest running intentional community (or commune) in the U-states)

If you ain’t been to Aubergine, do yourself a solid and motivate up to Sebastopol!  It’s a beautiful hangar-size building full of vintage clothes, a big covered porch, bar and cafe.  Way chill hang, also an excellent place to do some last minute X-mas shopping.

I’m playing Friday!

30 Nov

‘Sup tribe.  Sorry for my extended silence.  A momentous weekend approaches:

This Friday night, I’ll be opening for my friends Guella, a great warm improvising band.  I’ll go on at 9pm, playing solo.  It’s going down at the Abbey (a bar in San Francisco, 4100 geary at 5th).  No cover, come and be cloistered with some nice nuns and monks…

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
On Sunday afternoon, I’m going to my happy place (to record!) at Ex’pression College in Emeryville.  We’ll be working on a song called Smashing, that you may’ve heard live over the last couple years.  Guesting on percussion will be Sam Ospovat, who’s in a lot of bands I admire.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I’ve been on a dance kick lately, took a class with a woman named Hiroko Tamano.  She’s a bright light of a person, bringing Butoh dance to the Bay Area.  Butoh is a modern dance form that comes from Japan.  It first sprung up in response to the pain of World War II.  Hiroko’s company will be performing next Friday Dec.10th, 7pm at the Berkeley Art Museum, with a live heavy metal band.

Nice to be a student again.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In HOME PHONE news, I’ve been trying my hand at mixing lately, and made some subtle changes to the record…If you can tell me which song sounds different, I’ll send you a free download… Say what? I love you.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Lastly, me and the band are playing in Sebastopol at Aubergine, Sunday Dec.19th from 4-7.  This spot is incredible, it’s a big comfy hangar full of vintage clothes with a bar at one end.  Many musician friends will be sitting in with us…it’s da holiday jam sesh!!!

There, the silence is broken!  Hope to see you this Friday at the Abbey, more news soon.

Flowers

19 Oct

Recently I got to make some music for a video by Ben Coleman, who makes flowers and other things out of paper.  Miraculous.  Dig his digital gazebo, many pretty things there.

Peep the Quartet!

8 Oct

What’s good, kids?  Here’s a jam from a recent show at the Beach Chalet in SF.  We love hidin’ out at the restaurant gigs.  Where else can we do what we want so freely?  This quartet is pure Jedi pedigree: James Harman-guitar, Tim Brennan-drums, Brian Wilkerson-Bass

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In other news, I’ll be playing a solo show this Sunday at Viracocha in SF.   I’ve been anticipating this show for a long time: it’s the release party for the Secret Secretaries new record.  So pumped.  Also on the bill, a band on tour from Japan, called BOTH CHEESE… (love the language mutations).  Show starts with me playing at 8pm .  998 Valencia St., SF CA 94110             Cover probably $5…not sure though….
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Lastly, it is of central importance to your general happiness and well-being that you hear my new EP, “HOME PHONE”.  If you’ve not heard it yet, don’t deny yourself any further: http://www.peckthetowncrier.com/listen

Much love y’all.
